Sad but true...Better Days is the only bar left on Main Street.
First it was Pastimes, my home away from home, that closed to
make way for more gas guzzling trucks on display.  Now it is PJ's
Pub for licensing reasons.  We have no direct competition and if
life were a board game I would be the winner.  Sadly it isn't a
board game and I kinda feel like the last person to jump ship.
Don't worry I won't and I plan to keep on as a badly paid
intermediary between the government and you all.
So what happened is a perfect example of how bad policy by New
York State resulted in a economic loss for everyone including
themselves.  This year our new Governor, Elliott Spitzer,
bolstered the state liquor authority with some kind of task force
and a mandate to enforce to the letter of the law.  This has
caused all kinds of Draconian laws to be of issue because the
task force is comprised of revenuers who work on commission.
One of these laws is to the effect of:
"The licensee must notify, in writing, the appropriate local
municipality of the intent to renew 30 days prior to the filing of that
renewal"
So if you send in your liquor license renewal without the proof of
that notification they won't even look at it.  If you send in the
renewal but the notification isn't a 30 days old, per the postmark,
they send it back.  It is petty bullshit and in this case the owners
pretty well said they would just close down rather than try to
survive without revenue until the state grants the renewal.  Now
that business pays no wages, buys no product, sells no product.
Now that business pays no payroll tax, pays no sales tax, and
collects no sales tax.  I would guess that PJ's generates about fifty
thousand dollars a year in aggregate taxes that may or may not
be re-established.
Lets hope it is re-established soon because it does create a
whole in our marketplace.  Better Days can't absorb the PJ's
crowd in any way.  They are a good old roadhouse where people
go to get drunk, shoot pool, dance to a DJ, and carry on.  Better
Days is a tamer place, we are kinda uptight in comparison.  No
foul language or conversation, no smoking, we like to protect the
ladies and we don't put up with angriness.
So for all you who are worried that Better Days will see an influx of
motorcycle gangs, fistfight's, drug deals, and prostitution it won't
happen.  We plan to hold the status quo....
