Today seemed like a good day to start a Better Days Blog. Just before we took over Better Days the world
changed. I remember watching it on TV that morning but had no idea how much impact it would have on
me and my new business. You might not realize this but 9/11 is part of Better Days and it effects alot of
what we do. Next time you are in the pub look up above our bar mirror and you'll understand better. There
are three wall hangings and all are directly related to this attack against our country.
The first is an American flag given too us by John and Gayle Childs on Sept 11th, 2003, the date of our first
block party. From our first day in business we have made a point to keep the flag front and center. We
love our country and are honored to live in the freedom that flag symbolizes. It's a reminder of how much
freedom we have and how hard the fight has been to keep it that way.
The middle picture is Cpl. Jason Dunham from Scio. He's our hero and inspiration. He was killed in Iraq in
2004 when he placed himself on a hand grenade in order to save his fellow Marines. His friends gathered
at Better Days to mourn his death and celebrate his life. Jason's story from growing up in Scio to the day
he gave himself to his country is a daily inspiration and reminder of the world we live in today. Every year
we have a party that benefits the future memorial to Jason and his ultimate sacrifice.
The third picture was a gift from Walter Embser just after 9/11/01. "Wally" is a Wellsville native and former
NYC Police Officer who lost co-workers in the attack. The picture was taken on 9/11 and it provides a stark
view of the national sentiment just after that terrible loss. It also reminds us that although we live seven
hours from the city it immediately effected us and our close friends. Thanks again Wally for the picture as it
serves as a constant reminder.
Just below these three pictures you'll see a Marine Corp fatigue cap given to us by Cpl. Jason Hunt after
his first tour in Iraq. It hangs there to remind us he is harms way and risking his life daily for our country.
He's due back in the states around the first of October to start a new life with his new wife Jessica. If you
see him please thank him for his service and bravery because he is a hero to all of us.
Stop in a have a drink but don't forget to look up and think about the freedom we have 'fought and died to
keep'.
