What a strange weekend it was...birthday weekends already put a weird twist on things for me.
Saturday was a really unique evening after the village lost all power from 7:30-10:30pm. Of
course this blackout occurred while the bar was full and after it became obvious the lights weren't
coming back on most of the crowd left. The band was happy to wait out the darkness and just as
we were working on getting a couple generators the man flipped the switch. Although the crowd
never quite recovered from the power outage the band sure did!!! They played until well after I
can recall.....it was a landmark performance amongst the Grateful Dead inspired and I hope to
have a recording to share soon!! Thanks to the APE for an electric night.
The fundraising portion of the night was a total flop and although I don't have the exact numbers it
is safe to say we didn't clear a hundred bucks..... Don't feel bad.... Better Days customers have
been more than generous in helping Victim Services of Wellsville in the past and they are grateful
for every dime!!!!
Its true I turned thirty three on Sunday and after my party the night before I'm lucky to have not
suffered organ failure. Besides the near death expirience called a hangover it was a very
interesting birthday. Early in the day I was in the alley behind Better Days trying to secure a big
board to my vehicle's roof rack when 'sssshhhswoooooosh' a sharps-shinned hawk flew within a
foot or two of my head. I turned around and he had landed quickly, we made eye contact, and he
took off. Apparently I had ruined his pigeon hunt but boy did he give me a thrill.... I made it back
home after nearly vomiting in Giant Food Mart only to have a enormous red-tailed hawk perched
near my driveway. As I pulled in the drive I came face to face with the raptor, close enough to see
it was a familiar hawk. Usually I see him from a distance, typically on a telephone pool, and I
usually call him 'Red Hood'. But at a distance of less than fifty feet I got to see his face, eyes, and
trademark auburn hood. Within seconds he lit into the sunshine and circled slowly around me
showing off his winter colors. A rare chance encounter that leaves me wondering if they are telling
me something.....
